Nebula is a patented “semi-precious” metal which is hypo-allergenic and nickel and lead free. It is an alloy of silver tin, zinc and other non-toxic metals. It was created by silver artisan Peter Stone in a unique process that results in a metal that is just as lustrous as sterling but had a much lower price point and is a lot lighter in weight. It is solid, so there are no unsightly black peeling line, as there is with plating. It won’t turn green on your skin. If polished correctly, without harsh acid cleaners, it will not darken over time and oxidized like silver. It will never leave a black mark on your skin or clothes like oxidized silver. The main advantage is that you get high quality design, in an alloy that retains many of the sacred properties of the more precious metals, without the disadvantages, at a fraction of the price of silver.
Silver is not found in a pure state in nature. It is an element that is mixed with other metals. “Nebula” is the Latin word for “cloud,” as silver was traditionally separated from other metal ores by extraction processes that create nebulising clouds of different minerals for extraction. There are many processed silver products that contain other metals. Although some silver-bearing ores contain silver as their largest metal value, virtually none has silver as its main constituent. most are less than 1%. A typical ore might contain only 0.085 percent silver, 0.5 percent lead, 0.5 percent copper, and 0.3 percent antimony. About 2000 BC, they began using a heated flotation separation process. The concentrate would contain 1.7 percent silver, 10 to 15 percent lead, 10 to 15 percent copper, and 6 percent antimony. Then as today, much of the silver produced comes from ores not actually mined for their silver value. Rather these ores are mined for their their major metal value of either lead, copper, or zinc.
The best-known Silver alloys are:
- Sterling, which is 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper. Identified by stamping 925 or using the hallmark of a lion passant.
- Coin silver is an alloy of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. For jewellery and ornaments, 85–90 percent silver (and the balance copper) is frequently used.
- Dental alloys of 60–70 percent silver, 18–25 percent tin, 2–14 percent copper, and 0.5–2 percent zinc are amalgamated with varying quantities of mercury to form the filling materials for cavities in teeth.
- Sphalerite contains zinc (ZnS), and
- Chalcopyrite contains copper(CuFeS2) .
The astute jewellery customer should be aware of these. Additionally, those ores and alloys with a high lead content are not good for your health. Lead is present as galena (PbS).
We are sorry to say that the production of jewellery in Nebula has been discontinued due to the drop in the world price of silver.
The price of silver has dropped drastically as the digital age has replaced film photography. Between 25 and 40 percent of the world’s silver was consumed in the production of the photosensitive chemicals silver chloride and silver bromide. Additionally the demand for silver in batteries has dropped as technology has changed. Silver oxides (both Ag2O and AgO) serve as the cathodic materials in silver-zinc primary and secondary (i.e., rechargeable) batteries. The high energy density of the primary batteries is responsible for their employment as miniature power cells for cameras and timepieces. Other substances such as nickel and lithium and replacing the demand for silver in batteries. As demand lowers so prices drop. Due to the drop in mass production, with many silver mines closing, the cost of purified silver for Jewellery rises. The supply of recycled scrap silver has swung in to fill this demand making it not economically viable to continue to produce the amazing Nebula metal at this stage.
Therefore, the amazing metal called Nebula will no longer be produced. This secret alloy will become very rare.
